The $1.2-trillion investment
In November 2021, the U.S. signed a bipartisan infrastructure deal worth $1.2 trillion. The plan targets infrastructure that has been neglected for decades — and it creates opportunities for Canadians.
What it means for Canada
Several projects already include Canada. Amtrak has proposed extending its Chicago–Detroit service through Windsor and southwestern Ontario into Toronto. Projects like that create bids, contracts, and jobs in the utility sector on both sides of the border.
Cross-border contracts are a real possibility too — for example, Canadian border facilities built on U.S. soil to cut wait times. Add Canada's own $118-billion infrastructure investment, and demand for infrastructure services could spike. Competitive pressure may push Ottawa to spend more still.
Not a done deal
How much of this reaches Canadian workers remains uncertain. But the direction is clear: more projects, more jobs, more opportunity for infrastructure and utility firms.
CUTI's view
This is exciting news for anyone in — or joining — the infrastructure field. Canada holds some of the most stringent infrastructure standards in the world. Don't be surprised if U.S. companies and governments extend contracts to Canadian firms and workers. We'll post updates as this develops.
